I was surprised at him.
I looked at him as if he was spouting nonsense. "Pregnancy? What are you talking about?".
"I just ended a phone convo with Grace and she told me everything".
I was shocked.
How could Grace tell Nelson my secret?" Grace told you that I was pregnant?".
"Grace doesn't want me for you so she tried everything to discourage me".
"How did you get my friend's phone number?".
"Her phone numbers are all over her blog!!!".
My phone was ringing. It was Grace Craig.
I was frustrated rejected the call.
"Is it a secret? Your pregnancy?". He asked with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
I had to convince Nelson that I was not pregnant so that he wouldn't threaten me with my big secret.
I cleared my throat and held his gaze. "Do you know the father of the baby?"
"Grace Craig didn't give me that information".
"The father was Raymond Donald".
He gasped. "The engaged Raymond Donald?".
"Yes. It is because of his relationship status that I had to abort it".
"You aborted it? How come I don't believe you?".
"She really ab0rted it, Nelson Fred. I confirmed it myself". Rosa James said as she walked into our midst. She smiled at Nelson Fred. "I never knew that you and Victory Charles had an unsettled past".
"There is nothing to settle at all, Rosa James". I said with firmness in my voice.
"Of course there is something to settle, Vick". Nelson responded.
"You have an unsettled case in the VIP hall". I told Rosa James.
She gave a mock bow. "Let me leave you two to settle your lovelives" she walked into the building.
"How are your parents?". Nelson asked worriedly.
I didn't say a word, I just continued standing right there, looking at him as if he was crazy.
Grace Craig's car drove towards our spot. She popped her head out of the car window. "Get in, Victory!".
I made eyes at her and remained on that spot.
"I know you are mad at me. Get in, I will explain please".
I reluctantly joined her in the car and made eyes at Nelson Fred who waved excitedly at me.
I turned to Grace. "Madame, start your explanation".
"I was so surprised when someone called me this evening and was asking me if you were in any serious relationship and that he wanted to propose to you out of the blue. I didn't even know when I told him that you were pregnant! I don't want that Nelson in your life anymore! He caused you so much pain and now he wants to marry you because you came across each other? Why didn't he look for you all those while? Are men really usually like this?".
"Grace, I just want to take care of my parents and my baby. I am not interested in any relationship. The only thing men do is to take advantage of people".
"Do you think it is all men?"
"The only man that has ever loved a woman sincerely was my father. My father loved my mother but with what I have experienced personally with men, I don't think I want to trust anyone anymore".
"I understand everything, girlfriend".
"No, you don't. You are so lucky. You had a loving father and you have such a loving fiance".
Grace made face at me. "... and someone had twenty million naira a week ago".
We broke into laughter.
I turned on the stereo.
Immediately I got to the office, Raymond walked into my office with a paper bag.
He dropped it on my desk. "I got pears, apples, oranges, paw paw, bananas, coconut. You need the coconut water. You need the watermelon too. Reserve them in your fridge when you get home".
I was surprised at him. " Why are you bringing fruits for me?".
"The baby in your womb needs to be healthy".
"The baby in my womb? What on earth are you talking about? What baby are you talking about?".
"Our baby in your womb".
"You are making everyone so suspicious! Stop bringing fruits or food! I don't need it!".
His phone rang.
It was Rosa James.
"Why is Rosa calling me?" he muttered and placed the call on loudspeaker. "Hello, Rosa?".
"You bought all sorts of fruits at ShopRite at Sango Ota this morning around nine thirty-two and you took them to Victory Charles office just now. What for?".
"Where are you right now?".
"I don't need to be around you to know everything going on in your life. Why are you still communicating with Victory Charles?".
"You have no right to monitor my every movement because I don't do that to you. See you when I see you again". He disconnected the line and looked up at me.
I chuckled and shook my head in disbelief. "Are you for real?".
"If she continues with that attitude of hers, I might not go on with that marriage".
"You won't take that risk".
"I don't want my marriage to be like the one my mother had with my dad where I will be completely dominated by my own wife".
I nodded thoughtfully and packed the fruits into my bag. "Thanks for the fruits anyway".
He cleared his throat. "How was it with Nelson Fred? You guys are getting back together, right?".
"Yes". I lied and watched him closely to see his reaction.
He completely wasn't happy with it. "Congrats".
"Thanks". I nodded and smiled to myself.
"Does he know about our baby?"
"Please don't tell him about the baby yet. I will break the news to him myself".
"You still love him". He observed.
"Yes". I brought out one of the apples in the paper bag and munched.
He gasped. "You didn't wash that apple! That is not hygienic".
I shrugged and continued eating.
He smiled and watched me. "Is the baby kicking?".
I broke into laughter. "Baby that has not reached three months".
He chuckled and nodded awkwardly.
My phone rang. It was his mother. Rosa James has obviously done the usual. I looked up at him. "Your mum is calling me".
He snatched the phone from me and connected it. "Hello Mother! Why are you calling Victory?".
"I want to work hand in hand with Victory Charles in launching our furniture. I need her to take records of our sales and profits so that we won't make losses. By the way, what are you doing in her office?".
He cleared his throat awkwardly. "Er...I came to check some records of some goods".
"We settled everything with Victory Charles. Why are you still hanging around her? Do you like her?".
He burst into laughter. "Like her? I and Victory Charles have no such thing towards each other".
"Better then. Stop asking her for company and always spend time with your fiancee. Give Victory Charles the phone".
He gave me the phone and I placed it on my ear.
"Victory Charles, we are going to work hand in hand in developing Bower-bound pieces of furniture. I just need you and two of your trusted subordinates. I will be coming to Bower bound first thing tomorrow and we will be working hand in hand until we are done with catching the right audience".
"Okay ma'am".
She disconnected the line and I met Raymond's suspicious eyes. "What are you thinking right now?".
He sighed. "Mum wants to keep you closer because of Rosa James' insecurity".
I shrugged. "There is nothing to worry about".
He made eyes at me. "Nothing to worry about? What if she finds out that you are still pregnant?".
